FAQs From Sift Masterclass: Build the Best Directory for Your Organization

We recently hosted our first Sift “masterclass,” Build the Best Directory for your Organization. In the webinar, our Client Success team covered the ins & outs of the Sift Admin Dashboard, including:

  • Adding administrators
  • Importing data & building a directory
  • Customizing Sift
  • Features & ways to use Sift

The Client Success team also spent time answering some frequently asked questions that they receive. You can find out the answers to all of them (plus the topics covered above) by watching the on-demand webinar, but here’s a preview of a few of them.

Help! I’m receiving an error when uploading the CSV file with my people data. What happened?

Most of the time, receiving an error on a CSV upload means that something is off with the file itself.

The first thing to check is that you’re uploading the right file type. It may sound obvious, but we’ve seen it happen! Trying to upload a file that isn’t a CSV – even if it looks like one – won’t work. The file extension (ending) should be .csv, not .xlxs, .pdf, or anything else.

If you already confirmed you have the correct file type, then the next thing you should do is check that the column headers on your CSV match the Attribute fields exactly. These are case-sensitive, so often something as simple as a capital letter where it should be a lowercase or an extra space at the end of the attribute title can cause an error. It’s also a good idea to double-check that none of the required fields have changed since your last upload – remember, the source headers in your CSV and attributes must match exactly.

These are just some of the most common errors, so if you’ve already tried our tips and are still having trouble, don’t hesitate to reach out to us at support@justsift.com. In addition, we’ve recently made major updates to our data sync that allow us to better monitor the results of both successful and failed syncs.

Why doesn’t my org chart look right? Some people are missing and others are just floating by themselves without being connected to the rest of the organization.

This is also a pretty common issue, but unlike in the previous question, when this happens, you probably won’t get an error. But when you go to look at your org chart, it just doesn’t look right.

When this happens, go back to your mappings in the data sync step and take a look at your team hierarchies. Check that they’re filled out and that they’re properly mapped to the source data file. It’s also a good idea to check your source file to make sure everyone has a team leader assigned and that it’s mapped to the correct ID (such as an email address or name).

Once you make those corrections and re-upload your file, you’ll almost always see your org chart repopulate correctly and in the way you want to see it.
